New Mexico ADMISSIONS AND ENROLLMENT

The school does not discriminate in its employment, admission, instruction, or graduation policies on the basis of age, race, handicap, creed, color, religion, financial status, ethnic origin, or sex.
The school requires that each student enrolling in the Cosmetology, Manicuring, or Esthetician course is at least 17 years of age and has:

  • graduated from high school, GED OR
  • Federally approved ATB test

If a student is above the age of compulsory attendance, but does not have a high school diploma or GED, a prospective student must pass a Federally Approved Ability to Benefit Test for admission. Ability to Benefit testing information can be obtained from the school. [1/22/07]

Applicants for the Instructor Course must meet the following criteria:

  1. Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  2. Have met all requirements for licensure as a cosmetologist.
  3. Be at least 17 years of age.

The school does not recruit students already attending or admitted to any other school offering a similar program of study.



STATE LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS – NEW MEXICO

Any person is eligible to receive a license as a cosmetologist, or a manicurist who submits proof that s/he is at least 17 years of age; has an education equivalent to the completion of the second year of an approved high school; has completed the required clock hours in an approved school for the applicable course; has paid the required fees; and has passed the examination conducted by the Board to determine his/her fitness to receive a license.

Any person is eligible to receive a license as an Instructor who submits proof that s/he is at least 17 years of age; holds a New Mexico Cosmetology or Barber license; has an education equivalent to the completion of an approved four year high school; has completed an instructor course of 1000 clock hours or two years of work experience; has paid the required fees and has passed the examination conducted by the Board. Instructors in the State of New Mexico must obtain twelve clock hours of continuing education every year for license renewal. A Provisional Instructor License may be awarded to a licensee who has three years of documented work experience but such license will become void after two renewals if the licensee has not taken and passed the Instructor examination and obtained a regular license.
