600 HOURS
*Course is not currently offered at this time. [10/1/08]
DESCRIPTION: The Esthetics Course offers a complete 600 hour course in the science and art of esthetics. The program is designed to prepare and educate each student in the fundamentals of the basic esthetic education set forth by the New Mexico State Board of Cosmetology. It will also prepare each student for the practical and theory examination for a New Mexico Aesthetic License. In addition, the course will incorporate the knowledge needed for entry level employment in salons, spas, or clinical esthetics.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course requirements, the graduate will be able to:
- Perform and meet the standards set by the school and the esthetic industry
- Perform technical, communication, and servicing skills
- Successfully complete the State of New Mexico requirements to practice esthetics
- Exhibit the kind of professionalism necessary to gain and maintain entry level employment.
- Take and pass the New Mexico State Board of Cosmetology Exam for Aesthetic licensing.
FORMAT: The clock hour education is taught within a set of structured curriculum that prepares students for state board examination, graduation, and entry level skills. The esthetic course encompasses both theory and practical education for each topic. Clinic equipment and products are comparable to those used in the industry. The course is presented through well developed lesson plans, which reflect current educational methods. Subjects are presented by means of lecture, demonstration and student participation. Instruction will be supplemented with visual aids, guest speakers, field trips and other instructional techniques.
REFERENCES: Students follow Milady’s Standard Fundamentals for Aestheticians textbook. A comprehensive library of references, periodicals, books and DVD’s are available to support the course of study and supplement the student training.
EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM: The school encourages qualified students to obtain salon sponsors for participation in the state approved student externship program. It allows students who have completed 50% of the required hours and passed a written and practical competency evaluation to earn hours and participate in on-the-job training up to eight hours per week in an area salon. The student must be maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress according to the school’s policy, be current on all written examinations, obtain a duplicate student permit, and meet any other eligibility requirements set forth by the school in order to participate. This is an excellent opportunity to reinforce the basic skills learned at the institution. It also facilitates an easier transition for the graduate from school to work.
GRADING PROCEDURES: Students are assigned theory study and a minimum of practical experiences. Theory is evaluated after each unit of study. Practical assignments are evaluated as completed and counted toward course completion only when rated as satisfactory or better. Practical skills are evaluated according to text procedures, performance standards established by the state licensing agency, set forth in the Practical Skills Evaluation Criteria. Students must maintain a theory grade of 75% and pass a final written and practical exam prior to graduation. Students must make up failed or missed tests and incomplete assignments. Numerical grades are considered according to the following scale:
- 91 – 100 Excellent – 4
- 81 – 90 Above Average – 3
- 75 – 80 Satisfactory – 2
- below 75 Unsatisfactory – 1
